The Malta experience

The Malta experience

Only a two-hour-flight away a whole new world was ready to be explored by all of the curious 4th-year-students of our school. For a week the island of Malta was home to us where we stayed with host families, visited some cities and of course went to school.

While riding on a bus on the left side of the bumpy roads we got to experience the beautiful scenery of Malta as well as the quite discomforting style of driving. Something that most of us did not expect to see was the number of cranes and construction sites – from a balcony you could see twelve cranes at once.

Our tour guide with limited time-management skills showed us around the island of Gozo, the capital Valletta and the city of Mdina. On our way to Mdina we stopped and got breath-taking views of the Mediterranean Sea from the Dingli Cliffs. Besides the astonishing sights of Malta, we attended the ESE Language School from Monday to Thursday and thus improved our English.

At night we often thought about how nice our bed at home was and how lucky we are to have central heating in Austria. Our host families explained to us that since they only have about three months when the weather is cold enough for the people to need heating, it does not pay off to get central heating in Malta – that is why we built a completely new relationship with blankets.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay in Malta, and it made most of us feel grateful to come home again and live in a country like Austria. Additionally, a thank you goes out to our teachers who joined us on this trip.
